About the Florida Burrowing Owl

The Florida Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia floridana) is a small, diurnal owl native to open areas in Florida. Unlike most owls, it nests in burrows, often dug by other animals like gopher tortoises. These owls are known for their alert posture, curious behavior, and important ecological role, helping control insect and rodent populations. Due to habitat loss, they are considered a species of conservation concern.
