Why Ospreys Are Called “Fish Hawks”

Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) eat almost only fish. You’ll see them circling high over lakes and ponds, around 50–100 feet up watching for a splash. Then they dive feet first and grab their catch with strong, curved talons.

Where Ospreys Build Their Nests

Ospreys make big nests of sticks that can be as wide as 3–6 feet. You might see these nests on dead trees, utility poles, or special platforms people set up just for them. Orlando Wetlands Park has several active nests, so it’s a great place to watch them up close.

Orlando Wetlands Park is one of the best places in Central Florida to see them in action.
