My wildlife photographs, a Roseate Spoonbill in flight over the Orlando Wetlands was featured in the German publication, Bild.

For those outside of Europe, it is hard to overstate the reach of this publication. Bild is the best-selling newspaper in Europe and currently holds the sixteenth-largest circulation worldwide. As a wildlife photojournalist and Florida Master Naturalist, it is a distinct pleasure to be able to share Florida’s natural beauty with millions of readers across the globe.

The Iconic Roseate Spoonbill

The Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) is a crown jewel of Florida’s avian life. Often mistaken for flamingos from a distance, these birds are actually members of the ibis family and are a favorite subject for bird photographers due to their vibrant pink plumage and prehistoric profile.

Behavior & Interesting Facts

  • Tactile Feeding: Unlike birds that hunt by sight, spoonbills use “tactile feeding.” They swing their spatula-shaped bills through the water, using sensitive nerve endings to feel for the vibrations of shrimp and small fish.

  • Color from Crustaceans: Their stunning pink hue is “diet-derived.” They ingest carotenoid pigments from the shells of the crustaceans they eat.

The Location: Orlando Wetlands Park

The image featured in Bild was captured at Orlando Wetlands Park in Christmas, Florida. This 1,650-acre sanctuary is one of the premier photography locations in the state.

While it was originally designed as a man-made wetland system for water reclamation, it has evolved into a thriving ecosystem. For a photographer, it offers wide-open vistas and an incredible density of wildlife, from American Alligators to the rare Snail Kite. The park’s berms provide the perfect vantage point for Birds in Flight (BIF) photography, allowing us to capture spoonbills as they traverse the marshes in the early morning light.
