How Small Are Your Workshop Groups?

Workshops are intentionally limited to 5 participants per session. Because of this small group size, Ronen can offer personalized instruction, more one-on-one time, and less disturbance to wildlife. Furthermore, smaller groups create more flexible photo opportunities, which in turn maximizes both learning and photographic results.

What Camera Equipment Do I Need to Bring?

Participants are encouraged to bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera paired with a telephoto lens. Specifically, a focal range of 200 to 600mm is ideal for capturing Florida’s diverse wildlife and birds. If you do not own a long lens, contact us and we will point you toward rental options nearby.

In addition to your camera and lens, be sure to pack the following essentials:

  • Spare batteries and high-capacity memory cards
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes
  • A tripod or monopod for added stability when needed
  • What Is the Best Time of Year for Wildlife Photography in Florida?

Florida offers year-round wildlife photography opportunities, so there is truly no bad time to visit. That said, each season brings its own highlights:

February through May: Prime nesting season with active rookeries and vibrant breeding plumage.

November through March: Peak migratory bird season at Merritt Island NWR, with increased raptor and waterfowl activity throughout the state.

April through May and October through November: Migration periods at Fort De Soto Park for shorebirds and raptors.

Because of this variety, many photographers choose to return multiple times throughout the year in order to experience different species and conditions.

How Far in Advance Should I Book?

For popular dates during spring nesting and winter migration, we recommend booking one to three weeks in advance to secure your spot. Some locations fill quickly, especially on weekends and during peak bird activity. Therefore, the sooner you reach out, the better your chances of getting your preferred date and location.

Florida Wildlife Photography Workshop Locations

Our Florida wildlife photography workshops take place at the state’s premier spots for wildlife and bird photography. Below is a full list of locations we regularly visit:

      • Everglades National Park (alligator, spoonbill, and wading bird diversity)
      • Wakodahatchee Wetlands (rookery action and close bird encounters)
      • Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (winter birds and space coast species)
      • Fort De Soto Park (migrations, shorebirds, and sunrise and sunset shooting)

Is Lodging Included in Multi-Day Tours?

Lodging is not included in the base instruction fee. However, we do offer all-inclusive photography packages for your convenience. For an additional fee, we can arrange accommodations as part of a complete workshop package so that you can focus entirely on your photography.

If you prefer to book your own accommodations, Ronen provides a curated list of recommended hotels for each tour. These properties are strategically chosen for their proximity to our sunrise shooting locations so that you minimize travel time and maximize time behind the lens.

  • What Should I Bring to a Florida Wildlife Photography Workshop?

In addition to your camera gear, make sure to pack the following essentials before heading into the field:

    • Camera and telephoto lens (200 to 600mm suggested)
    • High-capacity memory cards and spare batteries
    • Water, sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), insect repellent, and weather-appropriate clothing
    • Comfortable shoes suitable for walking and standing in the field
    • A portable rain cover for your camera, especially during summer months
    • Snacks and a lightweight backpack

I Don’t Have a 600mm Lens. Can I Still Join?

Absolutely. While long lenses are ideal for bird photography, many of our locations, such as Wakodahatchee Wetlands, allow for close encounters where a 70-200mm or 100-400mm lens works perfectly well. Furthermore, if you need more reach, Ronen can provide lens rental recommendations tailored to your budget and gear setup.

What Rain Gear Do I Need for Florida Weather?

Florida is known for its sudden afternoon thunderstorms and tropical humidity. Because some of the best moody lighting occurs during overcast or drizzly conditions, we do not always stop shooting when the rain starts. To protect your equipment, consider the following options:

Premium Protection: For professional setups such as a 600mm f/4, the Think Tank Photo Hydrophobia series is the gold standard. It includes a dedicated eyepiece and allows you to keep your hands inside the cover to adjust settings while shooting.

Budget-Friendly Option: Op/Tech USA Rainsleeves are affordable, lightweight, and easy to carry in your back pocket. They are designed specifically for DSLRs and mirrorless systems, so they work well as an emergency backup.

Essential Low-Tech Tip: Always carry a large microfiber towel and a few silica gel packets in your camera bag. These absorb moisture and help prevent lens fogging after you transition from Florida’s heat into an air-conditioned vehicle.

Do You Offer Image Reviews and Critiques?

Yes, feedback is a core part of the learning experience. Specifically, the level of review you receive depends on the length of your session:

Multi-Day Workshops and Tours: All multi-day programs include dedicated daily image review and critique sessions. During these sessions, we look at your work on a larger screen, discuss composition, and refine your storytelling approach for the following day’s shoot.

4 or 8-Hour Workshops: During single-day sessions, Ronen provides real-time field critiques by reviewing your images directly on your camera’s LCD screen. This immediate feedback allows you to adjust your settings, angles, and technique while you are still in the field with the wildlife, so that you do not miss the next shot.

In every case, the goal is to help you see like a professional photojournalist and move well beyond the basic snapshot. You can also book a standalone online image review and critique session at any time by visiting our dedicated Online Image Review page: https://wildlifewithronen.com/wildlife-photography-image-review-virtual-consultations/

What Is Your Weather Policy?

Workshops run in light rain, as these conditions often lead to unique wildlife behaviors and soft, even lighting. However, safety is always the priority. In the event of lightning, high winds, severe weather warnings, or park closures, we will pause or reschedule the session at no additional charge.

Do You Offer Gift Certificates?

Yes. A wildlife photography workshop makes an incredible and memorable gift. Simply contact Ronen directly to arrange a custom gift voucher for a specific tour or a general dollar amount. You can also book or learn more about gift certificates here: https://wildlifewithronen.com/wildlife-photography-gift-cards/

Will We Learn About Bird Behavior or Just Camera Settings?

Unlike a standard photography tour, Ronen’s background as a Florida Master Naturalist means you learn far more than camera technique. In addition to settings and composition, sessions cover bird behavior, nesting cycles, and how to read lighting patterns. As a result, you develop the ability to anticipate the action before it happens rather than simply reacting after the fact.

What Is Your Cancellation and Refund Policy?

Our workshops represent a significant commitment of time and resources. For that reason, please review our policy carefully before booking:

Participant Cancellations: All fees, including deposits, are non-refundable.

Rescheduling: While refunds are not available, we are happy to move your booking to a future date provided you give at least one week’s notice before your scheduled session. All rescheduling is subject to current availability and must be requested via email.

Host Cancellations: In the rare event that Wildlife With Ronen, LLC must cancel a workshop due to emergency, health, or logistical issues, you will receive a full refund promptly.

Travel Insurance: We strongly recommend purchasing third-party travel insurance through providers such as Allianz or Travelex. This protects your investment in the event of personal illness, family emergencies, or travel delays.
