Wildlife Photojournalist & Workshop Leader – Ronen Tivony
About Ronen Tivony – Wildlife Photojournalist and Workshop Leader
I am Ronen Tivony, wildlife photojournalist and workshop leader, dedicated to telling the stories of wild places and the creatures that inhabit them. With three decades of professional photojournalism behind me and images published in the world’s most respected media outlets, I now channel that experience into immersive, small-group wildlife photography workshops across Florida and beyond. This page covers my background, published work, awards, and what you can expect when you join me in the field.
Published Work – Images in Global Media
My wildlife and photojournalism images have appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Good Morning America, NBC, ABC, BBC, HBO, TIME, CNN, Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic, The Guardian and many other leading publications worldwide.
Three Decades in News Photojournalism – Then the Wild Called
For thirty years I worked as a news photojournalist, documenting breaking stories and historic events under deadline pressure. That career built an instinct for decisive moments, an eye for light, and deep technical fluency with a camera in any conditions.
After three decades, I made a deliberate shift toward the natural world and toward teaching. Concentrating on wildlife photojournalism and leading photography workshops outdoors allows me to slow down, study animal behavior more deeply, and help fellow photographers create images that carry genuine narrative weight. The skills are the same; the subject just moves on its own schedule.
Recognition, Leadership, and Fellowship
During my news career I served as a board member and Vice President of the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles (PPAGLA), advocating for high standards in visual journalism and supporting photographers at every career stage.
In 2020, the Royal Photographic Society awarded me a prestigious Fellowship, recognizing technical excellence and a strong personal vision. That distinction, one of the highest honors in international photography, continues to shape how I teach, mentor, and approach every image in the field.

What You Learn in a Photography Workshop with a Wildlife Photojournalist
Joining Ronen in the field means working alongside a working wildlife photojournalist and workshop leader — not a classroom instructor. Every session is tailored to where you are as a photographer. Students at Ronen’s workshops regularly cover:
Camera settings for wildlife – aperture, shutter speed, ISO in fast-changing light
Animal behavior and anticipation – reading the scene before the action happens
Composition and storytelling – building images with narrative, not just subjects
Post-session image review – personalized feedback on your shots from the day
Field ethics – approaching wildlife responsibly and without disturbance
Wildlife Photography Workshop Locations Across Florida and Beyond
As a wildlife photojournalist and workshop leader, I run regular workshops across some of the most productive wildlife locations in the United States and beyond:
- Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach
- Everglades National Park
- Orlando Wetlands Park
- Fort De Soto Park, St. Petersburg
- Owl Photography near Miami
- Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive
- St. Augustine Alligator Farm
- Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
- Multi-day Best of Florida tours
Beyond Florida
- Bosque del Apache, New Mexico
- Hummingbird Photography, Arizona
- Pelicans and Sea Lions, La Jolla, California
- Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Each location is chosen for predictable wildlife activity, varied species, and photographic opportunity across different seasons.
Life Beyond the Camera
When I am not photographing or leading a workshop, you will often find me on the water in a kayak, exploring new habitats, scouting locations, and planning the next adventure. Time outdoors keeps my eye sharp and continuously fuels fresh ideas for upcoming workshops and long-term documentary projects.

EXCELLENT Based on 29 reviews Posted on martin whiteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. If I could give six stars I would. Ronen was a great coach with a relaxed and patient style with someone grappling with new camera and very much in the amateur camp! I learnt so much and came away with completely different perspectives on what makes great pictures and technically how to get them. Fascinating too that one he shot on the trip appeared published the next day , my version looked a little different! Best investment you could make if you are aspiring to improve your wildlife photographyPosted on Jen WaltersTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a wonderful experience at Ronen’s photography workshop in Orlando. He took the time to help us fine-tune our camera settings, which made a significant difference for me—I can already see clear improvement in my photos. Ronen was generous in sharing his knowledge, especially when it came to recognizing the right moments to capture the best shot, and he offered thoughtful, constructive feedback during the image review session. I’m truly grateful for his time and expertise and hope to have the opportunity to join him in the field again.Posted on Kimberly GeorgeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This workshop exceeded every expectation! Not only is Ronen incredibly knowledgeable and skilled, but he is also a genuinely kind and encouraging person. He was patient with me and welcomed/encouraged questions, which made it easier for me to learn, and ultimately grow. Admittedly, I came into this experience a little discouraged with past attempts to photograph birds, but I walked away feeling inspired, more confident in my photography skills, and truly grateful for the experience and wealth of information that I will carry with me throughout my photography journey. Highly recommend!Posted on Jennifer BrittonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We enjoyed a full day with Ronen at the Orlando Wetlands and Gatorland. Ronen was very informative and patient with us as he talked to us about ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. He has made me feel more confident with my camera as well as with what to look for when taking pictures. ***BEHAVIOR*** Ronen is AMAZING and I 1000% recommend!!! Now...time to go buy a Sony camera...LOL Thank you for everything Ronen, you are the best!Posted on Christina BaileyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. An inspiring and knowledgeable workshop with Ronen. He took the time to walk me through camera setup and explain everything there before heading out for an afternoon in the wetlands. Ronen throughly and thoughtfully answered all my questions and was a wealth of information for all aspects of photography that I have been able to take home and continue building upon. Highly recommend.Posted on Meirav HofmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Simply the best! Ronen is knowledgeable, efficient and an amazing teacher. He knows the perfect timing and location for every photography goal. Spent an afternoon with him photographing birds and already booked my return visit. Strongly recommend!Posted on John GolanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I spent an afternoon With Ronen in Wakodahatchee Wetlands. He was fantastic. I have limited experience with bird photography. Ronen was a patient instructor. He adjusted my camera to the appropriate settings and spent the entire afternoon giving valuable lessons and tips about techniques needed to optimize my photographs. If you have any interest in birds, I would highly recommend an afternoon With Ronen!Posted on Julia FermayerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I took a wildlife photography class with Ronen and it was fantastic. I learned so much in a short time, and the wildlife opportunities were incredible — from Great Blue Heron chicks to an Anhinga with a fish speared on its beak. Ronen is knowledgeable, patient, and great at helping you get the shot. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to improve their wildlife photography.Posted on douglasheller1Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I just completed a 5 day Best of Florida Photo workshop with Ronen. All I can say is that if you ever, ever have the opportunity, you should take a workshop with Ronen. He is a master at his craft and has the ability to convey his ideas and knowledge in a very personal and professional way. Walking through Florida’s nature preserves with Ronen looking to position me in just the right way to capture stunning wildlife photos is an experience that I’ll never forget. Not to mention how he attended to every detail of the trip including airport pick up, snacks and drinks, extra camera gear you might need and everything in between. I’ve taken several photo workshops and Ronen’s is by far the best experience I could ask for. I’m looking forward to another workshop in the future.Posted on Giri KondapuramTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It was the exact class I needed. Ronen provided answers/solutions to all my questions. He was patient, knew his subject and everything was slow paced and relaxed. For me, he opened an entire new approach to photographing birds. At the end of the session, he was kind enough to review some of my photos and provide valuable insights to how some of them could be improved. I cannot wait to get back there and put to practice what I learnt. I would recommend a class with Ronen to anyone who wants to improve his or her skillset and learn tips and tricks.
Why Learn from a Wildlife Photojournalist
There is a real difference between learning photography from a hobbyist and learning it from someone who has spent thirty years making images for a living. Every technique I teach has been tested in the field on actual assignments, not borrowed from a YouTube tutorial or a textbook.
What I bring to each workshop is not just technical knowledge, it is an editorial eye. I am always asking: what is the story in this frame? That question changes everything. It shifts your attention from settings and gear toward behavior, context, and moment. It is the difference between a sharp photo of a bird and a photograph that makes someone stop scrolling.
Students leave my workshops with better images, yes, but more importantly, they leave thinking differently about what they are trying to say with their camera. That shift in mindset is something you will carry into every session you shoot for the rest of your life, long after the workshop is over.
